How to prepare the whole family for family photos

If you’ve been tasked with preparing the whole family for family photos, this blog is for you. Family photos are a ton of fun and should leave you with images that document your growing family, but they do take some careful planning. In order to keep everyone happy and prevent any meltdowns, here are some tips for all involved:

How to prepare as Parents for family photos

TIP #1: don’t stress about the shoot. Yes, it might feel daunting, especially if you have multiple young kids, but the photos you’re dreaming of will come naturally if everyone goes with the flow.

TIP #2: get the super posed images with the kids done in the first 15 minutes. Once their patience and mood begins to wane, it may not come back!

TIP #3: focus on play, fun and entertaining the kids. It should feel like any other day in the park together!

TIP #4: expect a meltdown, and know it’s okay if it happens. It’s all about working with their moods and switching things up when we need to.

TIP #5: if you have 2+ young kids and/or dogs, think carefully about bringing the dog/s. The fastest way to get overwhelmed during photos is to be outnumbered. Think about the personalities of your kids and dogs, and if it’s effective to have them all together. Consider inviting the grandparents or other relatives along to help out!

How to prepare the kids for family photos

TIP #1: bribery is magic. If kids are at an age where they respond well to rewards, it’s a good way to keep them motivated.

TIP #2: if you have an infant, bring a favorite item to hold above the camera to get their attention. Things that are shiny or make noise always work well!

TIP #3: don’t forget the extra burp rags, wet wipes and a blanket. All three items can solve a number of problems!

How to prepare the Grandparents for family photos

TIP #1: use the buddy system or give them tasks. If you’re handling multiple kids and/or dogs, it’s a good idea that everyone has a task or a “buddy” they are responsible for. For example, grandpa burps baby, grandma watches for stray hairs etc, and one person per dog or child. This keeps things running smoothly!

TIP #2: give them one or two colors to coordinate with. If you aren’t a fan of super matchy-matchy outfits, choose 1-3 colors for everyone to wear. Make sure everyone wears pieces with solids, and there are no logos, words, busy patterns or small prints.

TIP #3: Plan ahead of time the pairings you want. We will have time to get everyone together and separately!

How to prepare the dogs for family photos

TIP #1: if your dog usually wears a harness, consider bringing a cute collar to change them into at some point.

TIP #2: have a bag of dog treats ready! Not only does it help guide their behavior, but I can use the treats to get their attention for photos also.
